Scott's Areas of Practice

  • Business & Commercial Law
  • Business Organizations
  • Estate Planning
  • Litigation & Appeals
  • Probate & Estate Administration

After graduating from The University of Tennessee College of Law, Scott began his career clerking for Chief Justice William M. Barker of the Tennessee Supreme Court. Scott joined Hodges, Doughty, & Carson, PLLC in 2014 after garnering significant experience as a litigator in the areas of trust and estate litigation, products liability claims, and construction disputes. On the planning and transaction side, Scott has crafted estate plans and advised business owners and nonprofit entities on general corporate matters, including formation, dissolution, property taxes, and tax exemptions.

Believing that community service is an integral part of practicing law, Scott has volunteered significant time representing indigent persons through Legal Aid of East Tennessee. The Tennessee Bar Association recognized Scott with its Harris A. Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year Award in 2010. The Tennessee Supreme has twice appointed him to represent indigent criminal defendants on appeal before the Court, resulting in two unanimous opinions in favor of the clients. Scott also serves as a Director for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Knox County.

Scott is an avid writer. His scholarly works have appeared in the Fordham Journal of Corporate and Financial Law and Transactions: Tennessee Journal of Business Law. In addition, he has written several feature articles for the Tennessee Bar Journal and the Knoxville Bar Association’s Dicta. In 2011, the Tennessee Bar Association honored Scott with the 2011 Justice Joseph W. Henry Award for Outstanding Legal Writing for his article Service of Process After Hall v. Haynes: Practice Tips for Counsel and Advice for Management. He formerly served on the Editorial Board of the Tennessee Bar Journal and the Publications Committee of the Knoxville Bar Association.

Scott lives in Fountain City with his wife, Sarah, and their daughter. Occasionally, he sneaks away to his workshop where he tries to build furniture.
